HOW STORIES BUILD EMPATHY IN MODERN FICTION

This article explores the micro-linguistic mechanisms that generate narrative empathy in contemporary fiction through the lens of cognitive stylistics. Drawing upon Text World Theory and Deictic Shift Theory, the study investigates how specific structural components—namely deictic projections, perspective focalization, and Free Indirect Discourse (FID)—manipulate reader perspective and psychological immersion. By analyzing a sample narrative extract, the paper demonstrates that empathy is not a subjective, random reader response, but a predictable cognitive outcome systematically engineered by the text's grammatical and semantic architecture. The findings offer an accessible yet rigorous framework for quantifying literary effects within modern text linguistics.
