Abstract

This article examines the role of chronology as the conceptual foundation of museum exhibition, arguing that it constitutes not merely a technical instrument for the temporal ordering of objects but a fundamental methodological category through which the philosophy of history is materialized in spatial form. The study traces the evolution of exhibition concepts across three museological paradigms the object-centered paradigm, wherein chronology functioned as an auxiliary systematization tool; the systemic-structural paradigm, which elevated chronology to the status of the primary structural axis or chronotope of the exhibition; and the communicative-cognitive paradigm, where chronology serves as a narrative strategy facilitating dialogue between the exhibition and its visitors. The epistemological functions of chronological ordering are analyzed in terms of its epistemic capacity to reflect historical processes through causal relationships, its semiotic role as a system of indexical and iconic signs that generate contextual meaning, and its axiological dimension, which reveals how the allocation of spatial emphasis to particular periods embodies underlying ideological or cultural values. The practical implementation of chronology in exhibition design is explored through its synthesis with spatial geometry, the creation of vertical and horizontal axes, and the integration of interactive technologies that transform linear temporal sequences into networked, multidimensional structures. The conclusion emphasizes that the effectiveness of exhibition chronology depends upon a dialectical balance among three interdependent factors the scientific reliability of historical sources, the aesthetic and emotional resonance of objects, and the cognitive and perceptual needs of the visitor. Achieving this balance, it is argued, requires the scholarly competence, philosophical depth, and artistic sensibility of the museologist, who must navigate between the risks of excessive schematization and historical chaos. Ultimately, the article presents chronology as a living bridge between past, present, and future, transforming the museum from a repository of artifacts into a space of meaning where visitors encounter the experience of time as a gateway to eternity.
