This article is dedicated to the evolution of our understanding of IgA vasculitis, from the historical descriptions by Schönlein and Henoch to the modern "four-hit" pathogenetic concept and nomenclature. It substantiates the significance of the Chapel Hill Consensus Conference nomenclature (2012) for the search for new biomarkers needed to assess the severity of the systemic process.
