Abstract

This review systematizes the theoretical and empirical foundations for shifting from conventional lithium salts toward solid-state multicomponent platforms, specifically ionic cocrystals and coordination frameworks with amino acids. The structural configuration of the Li+ hydration shell is analyzed alongside key criteria used to differentiate simple salts, ionic cocrystals, and coordination polymers. Furthermore, the study evaluates the commercial landscape of lithium-based formulations incorporating amino acids and their derivatives. Discrepancies between approved pharmaceuticals using traditional lithium salts and market offerings positioned as amino acid complexes or dietary supplements are examined in detail. Special emphasis is placed on lithium aspartate, lithium glycinate, and experimental lithium-amino acid constructs. The findings indicate that while this field holds significant scientific promise, it currently lags behind clinically established lithium agents in terms of robust evidence and regulatory endorsement.
