ALLIUM SPECIES AS SOURCES OF BIOLOGICALLY ACTIVE COMPOUNDS: BIOLOGICAL ACTIVITY AND THERAPEUTIC POTENTIAL
Vol. 6 No. 9 (2026) 12-17
Abstract
This review article systematizes and analyzes the available scientific data on the pharmacological properties and therapeutic potential of plants belonging to the genus Allium. Particular attention is paid to the biological activities of organosulfur compounds, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, phytosterols, and essential oils present in these plants. Numerous experimental and clinical studies have demonstrated that these bioactive constituents possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, antiviral, antidiabetic, anticancer, and hepatoprotective properties. Accumulated scientific evidence indicates the significant potential of Allium species as valuable sources of bioactive compounds for the development of novel therapeutic agents and their application in modern phytotherapy and pharmaceutical research.
