Abstract

The role of visualization in the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has undergone significant changes and expanded beyond simple radiological confirmation of tumors based on typical patterns seen on multiphase computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with contrast enhancement. The introduction of hepatobiliary contrast agents has allowed for the detection of hepatocarcinogenesis at earlier stages, while the use of ultrasound contrast agents has significantly strengthened the role of ultrasound (US) in diagnostic algorithms. New quantitative methods for assessing blood perfusion using CT and MRI not only enable earlier diagnosis and confident differentiation from other lesions but also provide biomarkers for assessing treatment response. With distinct subtypes of HCC identified, correlating them with specific visualization features offers great potential for assessing tumor aggressiveness and prognosis. This review presents the modern role of visualization, emphasizing its importance in successfully managing patients with HCC.
