THE FORMATION OF THE CONCEPT OF DISCOURSE MARKERS AND THE PROBLEM OF TERMINOLOGICAL DIVERSITY: A COMPARATIVE VIEW OF ENGLISH AND UZBEK LINGUISTICS

Аннотация
The article traces the formation of the concept of the discourse marker in English linguistics and analyses the problem of terminological diversity in labelling these units. Metalinguistic terms used in English and Uzbek linguistics are compared, and it is argued that in Uzbek linguistics such units are not described as a unified functional class but are distributed across morphological categories. A standardised terminological apparatus and four operational identification criteria are proposed.
