NORMAL RANGE OF PROSTATIC SPECIFIC ANTIGEN AND AGE-RELATED PROSTATIC SPECIFIC ANTIGEN IN SCREENING FOR PROSTATE ADENOCARCINOMA

Abstrak:

Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) has emerged as the most useful serum tumor marker in the diagnosis and screening of prostate adenocarcinoma. The current reference normal range (0 to 4.0 ng /mL monoclonal) has neither the sensitivity nor specificity to be generally accepted as a screening test, and alternatives to serum PSA have been proposed, such as PSA density, PSA velocity, and PSA adjusted for age. The age-adjusted definition of PSA takes into account the fact that the prostate enlarges as men age, and that screening should have maximum sensitivity in younger men and maximum specificity in older men.
