THE CURRENT STATE OF OVER-THE-COUNTER MEDICINE USE AMONG THE POPULATION: THE IMPORTANCE OF RATIONAL USE, SELF-MEDICATION, AND PHARMACEUTICAL COUNSELING
Vol. 6 No. 8 (2026): Eurasian Journal of Academic Research 79-84
Abstract
This article examines the current pattern of over-the-counter medicine use among the population, with particular attention to self-medication, reasons for medicine selection, sources of information, adherence to instructions and the role of pharmaceutical counseling. Over-the-counter medicines can provide convenient access to treatment for minor and self-limiting conditions when used appropriately. However, irrational use, incorrect dosage, prolonged administration, duplication of active ingredients and failure to recognize warning symptoms may create health risks. The article discusses major factors influencing non-prescription medicine use and emphasizes the importance of evidence-based pharmaceutical counseling. Strengthening public health literacy, improving communication between pharmacists and patients, and encouraging responsible self-care can contribute to safer and more rational use of medicines.
