THE ROLE OF INTONATION IN ENGLISH QUESTION FORMATION
Main Article Content
Аннотация:
The article examines the role of intonation in English question formation, emphasizing its significance alongside grammatical structure in spoken communication. It explores how pitch movement and boundary tones function as key indicators of interrogative meaning, particularly in yes–no and declarative questions. Drawing on established linguistic literature and qualitative analysis of spoken data, the study demonstrates that intonation often overrides syntactic form in listener interpretation. The findings highlight the interaction between intonation, syntax, and pragmatics, underscoring the importance of prosodic features in both linguistic theory and English language teaching.
