The article investigates the role of verbal polysemy in the system of the modern Russian language and its manifestation in colloquial speech. The study addresses the theoretical foundations of polysemy as a semantic phenomenon, examines types of figurative meanings — metaphorical and metonymic — and describes the functions of polysemous verbs: communicative economy, expressive imagery, and wordplay. Special attention is given to "diffuse" verbs with broad semantics, characteristic of the colloquial register. The material for analysis is drawn from live colloquial speech and explanatory dictionaries of the Russian language. The conclusion is drawn that verbal polysemy is not a stylistic defect but a natural property of language that ensures its flexibility and expressiveness.References
