Abstract

This article provides a systematic analysis of the political situation in Uzbekistan in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The crisis of the former Union, the repressions of the "Cotton Affair" and the processes of national identity of the people are highlighted. The legal and political steps of the republic towards achieving independence, the role of Islam Karimov in maintaining stability are also researched.
