Abstract

In linguistics, sound changes play an important role in the formation of words, the expression of meaning and the distinction of grammatical categories. This is especially true of the historical development of the Indo-European languages, where some phonetic phenomena had a direct impact on the morphological system of the language. This article discusses the most important of these phenomena — ablaut and umlaut.
