SYNONYMIC ANALYSIS OF THE WORD ‘HONESTY’

Honesty is one of the central moral concepts in English and occupies an essential place in ethical, philosophical and linguistic studies. The present paper focuses on the synonymic field of the word ‘honesty’ and aims to analyze the semantic shades, connotations, and pragmatic functions of its major synonyms such as truthfulness, sincerity, integrity, frankness, openness, and probity. The study highlights similarities and differences between these lexical items in terms of meaning, stylistic use, and contextual constraints. Attention is also paid to how these synonyms are represented in fictional and public discourse. The analysis is based on the principles of lexical semantics and synonymy theory, showing that although all the units refer to the general domain of moral correctness and truth, each of them encodes a specific aspect of the concept of honesty. The results confirm that the synonymic series of ‘honesty’ is not homogeneous, but structured according to different semantic components such as moral purity, transparency, accuracy of facts, and openness of communication.
