THE INFLUENCE OF NATIVE LANGUAGE ON ENGLISH GRAMMAR ACQUISITION

The acquisition of English grammar by second language learners is significantly influenced by the structural, typological, and cognitive properties of their native language. This phenomenon, commonly referred to as native language influence or cross-linguistic transfer, has been widely examined within the field of second language acquisition. The present thesis explores how native language structures affect learners’ acquisition of English grammatical features such as tense, aspect, word order, articles, and prepositions. Drawing on empirical findings from contrastive analysis, error analysis, and interlanguage studies, the thesis demonstrates that native language influence can both facilitate and hinder English grammar acquisition depending on the degree of similarity between the native language and English. The study synthesizes established research to highlight pedagogical implications for teaching English grammar to multilingual learners.

WORLD ENGLISHES AND THEIR IMPACT ON ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING

This article explores the concept of World Englishes and its impact on English language learning, particularly in the context of second language acquisition (SLA). As English has diversified across global contexts, regionally distinct varieties have emerged, challenging traditional notions of a singular, standard English. The paper examines how this linguistic plurality influences learners’ goals, attitudes, and identities, as well as the challenges it poses for English language teaching (ELT). It argues for a pedagogical shift that embraces linguistic diversity, promotes intercultural communicative competence, and prioritizes mutual intelligibility over native-like proficiency. By integrating World Englishes into language education, learners are better prepared to engage with English as a dynamic, global means of communication.

SOCIOLINGUISTIC PROFILE OF THE LEARNING CONTEXT

The target group of students live and study in Andijan city, Uzbekistan. They learn the English language as a Foreign Language. In the last few decades, the popularity of the English language has increased sharply that indicates a high interest in learning English as a foreign language. All private and public schools follow the national curriculum that aligns with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) that is designed to teach English as a Foreign Language. The government systematically modifies and reforms instructional recourses and assessment system to standardize language proficiency levels across educational institutions both private and public sectors. The government emphasizes the importance of involving more native speakers in educational system while the role of interlocutors should not be underestimated (Kachru, 1990). The reason is that there might be need for educators who use English as additional language to maintain productive learning journey.  Many students of the target group are from affluent families and they have to attend specialized schools and educational centers where they conduct English classes that follow the standard language norms with little exposure to any other language varieties. The main requirement for all school students is to achieve international certificates, such as SAT and IELTS in order to be admitted to local and international higher education institutions.

THE ROLE OF FIRST LANGUAGE (L1) TRANSFER IN SECOND LANGUAGE (L2) ENGLISH ACQUISITION

This paper explores the role of first language (L1) transfer in the process of acquiring English as a second language (L2). Drawing on current theories and research in second language acquisition, the study examines both positive and negative aspects of language transfer. While L1 can facilitate learning through structural and lexical similarities, it can also hinder progress through interference and fossilization of errors. The paper discusses various types of transfer, including interlingual and intralingual, and highlights the cognitive, linguistic, and pedagogical factors that influence how L1 shapes L2 development. The findings suggest that a balanced and strategic use of the learner’s first language can support English acquisition, especially when integrated thoughtfully into teaching practices. Rather than viewing L1 influence as a barrier, this study argues for its potential as a valuable tool in fostering more effective and inclusive language learning environments.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING: OPPORTUNITIES, CHALLENGES, AND PEDAGOGICAL IMPLICATIONS

The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) has significantly transformed educational practices, particularly in the field of English Language Teaching (ELT). AI-powered tools such as intelligent tutoring systems, automated feedback platforms, speech recognition software, and generative language models are increasingly integrated into language learning environments. These technologies offer personalized learning experiences, immediate feedback, and expanded opportunities for learner autonomy. However, the growing use of AI in ELT also raises pedagogical, ethical, and methodological concerns, including overreliance on technology, reduced human interaction, data privacy issues, and challenges related to academic integrity. This article provides a comprehensive analysis of the role of artificial intelligence in English language teaching. It examines the theoretical foundations of AI in education, explores its application across different language skills, and critically evaluates both its benefits and limitations. The article further discusses the evolving role of teachers in AI-supported classrooms and outlines pedagogical implications for effective and responsible integration of AI in ELT. The study argues that while AI has strong potential to enhance language learning, its success depends on thoughtful pedagogical design and informed teacher mediation.

THE INFLUENCE OF FRENCH ON THE EVOLUTION OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE

The influence of French on the evolution of the English language represents one of the most decisive phases in its historical development. Following the Norman Conquest of 1066, Anglo-Norman French became the language of administration, law, literature, and the aristocracy, while English persisted among the general population. Over several centuries, intense bilingual contact led to profound lexical borrowing, particularly in domains such as governance, jurisprudence, religion, warfare, education, cuisine, fashion, and abstract thought. This contact also affected English morphology and stylistics: many native terms were replaced or semantically narrowed, and Romance affixation patterns entered Middle English word-formation. The gradual re-emergence of English as the dominant public language in the late Middle Ages did not reverse French influence; rather, it resulted in a layered lexicon where Germanic and Romance items co-exist with distinct stylistic and register implications. Thus, French did not merely enrich the vocabulary of English but contributed structurally and functionally to its transformation from a predominantly Germanic idiom into a hybridized, highly stratified lexicon characteristic of Modern English.

THE ROLE OF COMMUNICATIVE LANGUAGE TEACHING (CLT) IN ENHANCING SPEAKING COMPETENCE

Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) has emerged as one of the most influential approaches in language education, emphasizing interaction and communication as the core of learning. In a global context where English proficiency is increasingly essential, speaking competence has become a key focus in language classrooms. However, traditional methods of language teaching, which often prioritize grammar and written skills, may not effectively develop students’ speaking abilities. CLT shifts this focus by encouraging real-life communication and active student participation, making it a promising strategy for enhancing speaking skills. This thesis explores the role of CLT in improving students’ speaking competence, particularly in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) settings. By investigating how CLT impacts learners' fluency, confidence, and overall communicative abilities, the study aims to highlight the potential of this approach in developing competent English speakers and its implications for modern language teaching practices.
