Abstract

This article examines the core ideas within sharia rulings, Islamic madhhabs and sects regarding jihad and sulh (peace/conciliation). It studies the concept of jihad in the Quran and hadith, its historical evolution and contemporary interpretations. The paper compares the perspectives of the four Sunni madhhabs (Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi‘i, Hanbali) and major Shia jurisprudential traditions (Ja‘fari) on warfare and peacemaking, highlighting legal and ethical bases. It also addresses common misinterpretations of jihad and explores inter-madhhab cooperation opportunities to promote peace and peaceful dispute resolution.
