Environmental literacy is a multifaceted concept that encompasses the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors necessary to understand and address environmental issues effectively. Rooted in the environmental education movements of the 20th century, it has evolved into a critical framework for fostering sustainable societies. This article explores the origin, definition, and components of environmental literacy, emphasizing its interdisciplinary nature and relevance in addressing global ecological challenges. Drawing on scholarly literature and key frameworks, it examines the cognitive, affective, and behavioral dimensions of environmental literacy, alongside its historical development and practical applications. The article adheres to international journal standards, providing a comprehensive analysis supported by relevant quotations and references.
